Why Getting the Right Plants Matters

When we visit our local garden centre, it might be difficult to resist buying new plants lovely. But how do you know which plants are healthy? Here are some tips to help you with choosing the healthiest plant.

Hold your plant up to the light and examine the leaves and stem on both sides. Discoloured leaves could indicate a nutrition shortage or another disease.

Look for a young, robust plant that has a strong root system, lots of fresh shoots and buds, and will grow. Remember, this may not always be the biggest plant.

Avoid plants with roots that are so densely packed that you can't see the soil or that have a lot of roots protruding from the drainage holes in the bottom of the container.

Resist the urge to buy plants on impulse

Eliminate plants that aren't growing well; there must be a good cause why an established plant isn't growing well. Watch out for damaged branches and leaves that appear to be dead or infected.

Plants with weeds or moss growing on the compost's surface should be avoided. This could be an indication of old stock that hasn't been properly cared for.

Verify if plants are growing nicely and uniformly. Some will have a "front" and a "back," possibly as a result of not being consistently rotated around and developing lop-sidedness.
