What Is Compost and How to Use It

Garden compost is used to describe either homemade garden compost or seed/potting compost:

A compost bin or heap is typically used to create garden compost, which is a soil-improving material formed from decomposed plant waste. It is incorporated into the soil to increase its fertility, structure, and ability to retain water.

A variety of commercially prepared composts, such as seed or potting composts, are available for use in growing seedlings or plants in containers. They are created by combining a wide range of ingredients, including loam, coir, peat, sand, and fertiliser, though you can create your own blend.
